The Irish Master Farriers Association was formed in the early 1970's around the time Bord na gCapall (The Irish Horse Board) started Farriery Apprenticeships. The I.M.F.A has to date over 100 Members which also includes apprentices.

The I.M.F.A usually hold their A.G.M on the first week-end in December where a commitee is elected to hold meetings throughout the year to implement objectives and rules set by the members. The Association hold clinics and seminars to promote the development of new products and procedures to enable the members to establish a higher standard of practice. They hold apprentice assessments for the 1st - 4th year and offer mock final examinations to apprentices wishing to do the Diploma in Farriery. A formal training school has been on the I.M.F.A's agenda for quite some time and are very active to the extent that a school should be built by the end of the 2001 in the Kildare area.
